Hymnos (1967) by Peter Maxwell Davies
for clarinet and piano
There is always a temptation to betray yourself, I was determined not to do it. ... When you have a creative urge, you can't stop writing. You don't have to have a reason to write; you just fulfil your own needs. Players seem to enjoy playing the pieces, and I hope that ultimately we can bridge the division between the language and the public. I do feel, on a good day, that perhaps one can do something to heal.
