Piano Study 1, completed in January 1997 and premiered at Stanford University in February 1997, initiates a projected series of five pieces (including Rain Study [1999] and Piano Study 2 [2001]) that are studies for both the pianist and the composer. Its focus is on the overlapping of two melodies and the sustained notes that result as well as the crossing and superimposition of the pianist's hands.
