Howards End, America
In February 2019, Earplay and RealOpera will present the world premiere of a major new chamber opera, Howards End, America by composer Allen Shearer and librettist Claudia Stevens. This riveting story of betrayal, race, and real estate transports E. M. Forster's novel Howards End from Edwardian England to 1950s Boston. With powerful imagery and ravishing music, Howards End, America evokes the atmosphere of an earlier time in America, a time as divided over race and class as today. Audiences will meet two sisters: the kind but cautious Margaret and the younger Helen, an impulsive social activist with camera in hand. What damage will they cause, and what romantic entanglements will befall them, when they set out to become the patrons of gifted black poet Leonard?
The Earplay/RealOpera co-production of Howards End, America is Earplay's first opera production. The fully staged production directed by Philip Lowery will feature leading vocal artists (including Nikki Einfeld, Philip Skinner, Sara Duchovnay, Michael Dailey, and Daniel Cilli), and the Earplayers will form the core of a thirteen-piece orchestra conducted by Mary Chun.
