Meet the Earplayers
Seven outstanding Bay Area artists who have developed a lyrical and ferocious style.
Terrie Baune
Violin
​
In addition to being a member of Earplay, Terrie Baune is co-concertmaster of the Oakland-East Bay Symphony; concertmaster of the North State Symphony; concertmaster of the Mendocino Festival Orchestra; Director of the Humboldt Chamber Music Workshop; and Music Director of the TBAM chamber music festival in Trinidad, CA. She is a a former member of the Empyrean Ensemble.
Tod Brody
Flutes​
Tod Brody has been Earplay's flutist since 1996. He serves in a similar capacity with Northern California new music groups Eco Ensemble, San Francisco Contemporary Music Players, and Empyrean Ensemble, and has enjoyed an extensive career that has included performances of numerous world premieres and many recordings. In addition to his career as a performer, Tod has served in leadership positions with music organizations for many years
Mary Chun
Conductor
​
A fierce advocate of new work, Mary Chun has worked closely with many contemporary composers. Passionate about new lyric collaborations, she has music-directed a number of world premieres. Mary is the Resident Music Director of Cinnabar Theater and Music Director for SEVENAGES Investment Company, a Beijing/Shanghai-based production company that produces blockbuster Broadway musicals in Mandarin translation. Closer to home, she has worked closely with West Edge Opera.
Peter Josheff
Clarinets

Peter Josheff, composer and clarinetist, has been a mainstay of the northern California new music community for forty years. He is a founding member of Earplay (1985) and of Sonic Harvest (2000). He is a core member of the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players, the Empyrean Ensemble (at UC Davis), the Eco Ensemble (at UC Berkeley), and the San Francisco Chamber Orchestra. He performs frequently with Opera Parallele, and is an Instructor of Clarinet at the University of California, Berkeley.

Peter's music has been performed by many ensembles and individual performers: the San Francisco Chamber Orchestra; the Farallon Quintet; Earplay; the Empyrean Ensemble; Dan Flanagan, violin; Rufus Olivier, bassoon; Haruka Fujii, percussion; Brenda Tom Vahur, piano; Brian Thorsett, tenor; and many others, including numerous premieres with Sonic Harvest. He recently completed Root Cellar (2024), a work for solo piano.
In his spare time Peter is an amateur guitarist/singer/songwriter.
Thalia Moore
Cello

Thalia Moore has been Associate Principal Cellist of the San Francisco Opera Orchestra since 1982 and a member of the cello section in the San Francisco Ballet Orchestra since 1989. As a member of the new music groups Earplay and the Empyrean Ensemble, Thalia has recorded works by many contemporary composers and has presented numerous premieres.
Ellen Ruth Rose
Viola

Ellen Ruth Rose enjoys a varied career as a soloist, ensemble musician and teacher with a strong interest in the music of our times. In addition to her work as violist and Artistic Coordinator of Earplay, she is a member of Empyrean Ensemble and performs often in other projects around the Bay Area and beyond. She is on the instrumental faculty at UC Berkeley and UC Davis and has taught at the University of the Pacific.
Brenda Tom
Piano

A graduate of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, Brenda Tom has performed as a soloist or principal pianist with many northern California ensembles and has recorded on numerous labels.
