Jonathan Khuner (conductor), a longtime Berkeley resident, is Music Director for West Edge Opera. He was their Artistic Director 1994-2009, and has conducted premieres of operas by Clark Syprynowicz and John Thow for them, also (elsewhere) of Allen Shearer and Erling Wold. Khuner is assistant conductor for San Francisco Opera, NY Metropolitan Opera, and Chicago Lyric Opera. He has assisted in operas by many living composers, including John Eaton and John Harbison. Other groups for whom he has conducted new works include American Opera Project, Composers Inc, Empyrean Ensemble, and Sonic Harvest. In recent seasons he conducted Jake Heggie’s The End of the Affair and the premieres of Europa by Peter Josheff and Allen Shearer’s Middlemarch in Spring. Khuner’s degrees (mathematics and musicology) are both from UC Berkeley.
